Being Indian by Pavan K.Varma

I finished reading Being Indian by Pavan K.Varma recently. I would recommend this book for all Indophiles. Pavan has presented an amazing insight into the making of Indians of today. He has nicely interwoven facts and anecdotes from history and recent times to derive his conclusions.

One amazing conclusion is 'Hinduism is a very practical religion', despite umpteen Muslim and Western invasions on India.India today also is a Hindu majority country unlike African and Asian nations which were subjected to invasions. The logic behind this conclusion is Hinduism is very flexible and non-paranoid religion. He explains as to why India has a thriving multi-cultural community although having its share of communal flare.

Indians present a total paradox to the outside world, on one side we are taking giant leap in economy and technology whereas we still struggle with reservation, casteism and abject poverty.

He forsees a great future for Indians though the path ahead is to be tread with utmost care. Our inherent problems can stifle the growth and push us back in the realms of darkness.

Overall a good read.
